December | Joy
Joy is more than just being happy when things go our way. Happiness depends on circumstances, but joy comes from God and remains even when life is hard.
Joy is the deep gladness and peace we feel knowing that God loves us, is with us, and is working for our good.
Joy is a gift of the Holy Spirit that helps us stay strong in faith no matter what we face.

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” Philippians 4:4

A Word of Encouragement
Happiness and joy are not the same. Happiness is based on what’s happening around us—it can come and go depending on whether things are good or bad. Joy, however, runs deeper. Joy is rooted in God’s presence, promises, and love, and comes from a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. That means even on a tough day, when life doesn’t go as planned, joy can still remain because it doesn’t depend on circumstances—it depends on Christ. So, when you feel discouraged or weighed down, remember that your joy is not fragile or temporary. The Lord Himself is your source of joy, and He never changes. Choose to hold onto His promises and trust His goodness. As you do, you’ll find strength and peace that lasts far longer than a fleeting moment of happiness.
Get the Conversation Going
Take a moment to discuss these questions as a family:
• What is something that makes you happy? Do you think joy and happiness are the same thing? Why or why not?
• Talk about times when life is difficult. Can we still have joy? Share personal examples about finding joy in God even in tough times.
Gospel Connection
True joy is only possible because of Jesus. The gospel teaches us that even though our sin separates us from God, Jesus’ death paid the penalty for sin, offering forgiveness and eternal life to those who believe in Him. His resurrection is proof of His victory over death. No matter what happens in this life, as Christians, we have hope and victory in Him. Because of the gospel, our joy doesn’t fade with circumstances—it is rooted in God’s unchanging love and the promise of life with Him forever.
