February | Holiness
God is holy.
God is pure and set apart.
God’s holiness is absolute perfection.
We show holiness by being like God in behavior and actions.
We show holiness by being separated from the world.
Valuable Verses
“There is no one holy like the LORD; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.” 1 Samuel 2:2
“But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: Be holy, because I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:15-16
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” Romans 12:1 (25 in 25 Verse)
“Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.” 2 Corinthians 7:1
A Word of Encouragement
The holiness of God is the pattern for how we are to live our lives. Now, God is perfectly holy. God is completely set apart from all creation, including humans. There is no one like God. As a result of sin, we are not going to be perfectly holy on this side of heaven. As believers though, God is calling us to be “set apart”. Our holiness comes through our daily pursuit of us living lives that are pleasing to God. We live by God’s standards, not the world’s. Truly living this way impacts literally everything! What we say and do. The way we treat others. The music we listen to. The videos we watch. The places we go. How we spend our time and money. This can sound a bit overwhelming and seemingly impossible to achieve. While, yes, perfection is impossible for us to achieve this side of heaven, believers have been given a Helper to be our guide for a life of holiness in a broken and sinful world. Take comfort in the fact that the Holy Spirit is within you and will help you in your pursuit of a life of holiness.
Get the Conversation Going
Take a moment to discuss these questions as a family.
• What does it mean for God to be perfectly holy? How does God’s holiness differ from human holiness?
• How do you think living by God’s standards (rather than the world’s) impacts daily decisions? Can you think of an example from your own life?
• How do you think our entertainment choices reflect our pursuit of holiness?
• What role does the Holy Spirit play in helping us pursue holiness?
Gospel Connection
Our holiness only results from a right relationship with God. It is only through our belief in Jesus Christ, and surrendering to Him as Lord and Savior, that we have the ability, through the power of the Holy Spirit, to reflect the holiness of God.
