September | Wisdom
Wisdom is the ability to put acquired knowledge and experience into action.
Wisdom involves making decisions based on more than just feelings or what we want at the moment.
“Spiritual wisdom can be defined as decision making based on God’s point of view.” Tony Evans
Valuable Verses
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” James 1:5
“For wisdom is better than jewels, and all that you may desire cannot compare with her.” Proverbs 8:11
“But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy, and good fruits.” James 3:17
“We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.”
2 Corinthians 10:5 (ESV -25 in 25 Verse)
A Word of Encouragement
Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom is knowing it doesn’t belong in a fruit salad.
While this saying is funny, it’s also true! It gives a great example of the difference between knowledge and wisdom. Wisdom is how we put what we know into action. And while earthly wisdom gained becomes “common sense” in our lives, GODLY wisdom leads us to a life that looks different. When we seek to know God through Bible study, prayer, worship, the counsel of the Holy Spirit and believers around us, the way we act changes. We respond to challenges with grace, make decisions that reflect His character, and walk in peace even when circumstances are uncertain. As we grow in wisdom, our actions begin to align with God's will, and we use what we know to make decisions about how to respond to different situations in a way that honors God and brings us peace.
Get the Conversation Going
Take a moment to discuss these questions as a family:
• How is God leading me to think differently?
• How do I need to reorder my heart’s affections - what I love - to honor Him?
• What actions or behaviors do I need to change to line up with God’s ways so that I can display godly wisdom in my life?
Gospel Connection
When we base our actions on what we know of God and His character, we are demonstrating our trust in Him and acknowledging His rightful place in our lives. When we place our faith and trust in Christ, the Holy Spirit guides us into deeper, wider, higher, fuller understanding of God and His ways. It is through Him that we can know how to act wisely.
